Franz H. Messerli, MD, an acknowledged expert in hypertensive cardiovascular disease and preventive cardiology, is Director of the Hypertension Program for the St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center and Professor of Clinical Medicine at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York.   Dr. Messerli earned his medical degree and did his postgraduate training in internal medicine and cardiology at the University of Bern in Switzerland, followed by a research fellowship at the Clinical Research Institute and the Hotel Dieu Hospital in Montreal, Canada.  Before coming to New York he was Director of Clinical Research for the Ochsner Clinic and Clinical Professor of Medicine for Tulane University’s School of Medicine in New Orleans.  Dr. Messerli has served on committees for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), is or has been on the editorial boards of several influential medical journals and has been principal investigator in numerous trials.  For his scientific achievements Dr. Messerli has received several awards, among them a honoris causa doctorate from the Jagiellonian University in Poland.  Dr. Messerli is currently part of University Medical Practice Associates specializing in hypertension.
